“Last weekend, I had occasion to drive home four rowdy children, ages 5 to 10. One of them found the CD to The Monster on Top of the Bed and asked me to play it. Another one found the book and turned the pages for the others. For the next 15 minutes, I had four rapt children in my car as the CD played twice. Any story that captures the attention of these four kids is definitely very good.” – Sharon Wood, parent.

From a teacher
“I like the fact that Karrit’s smaller than Suzy, and I love the monster’s eyes. You can’t tell if the monster is Asian, Eurasian, or American, and I like the ponytail. Every boy and every girl can identify with Karrit.”

- Belinda Chua, S. F. Bay Area

I purchased the book for my 6-year old daughter. She loves it! I read it to her once a week and every time she gets a smile from it. - Amy78101 You Tube Comment.

My kids adore this! Thank you soo much, they’ve never loved another book so much! – mbbird2, YouTube comment.

I even caught myself enjoying the story maybe more then my son. I appreciate that the book comes in multiple languages as it helps him to become familiar. First he heard it in English and now we’ll be trying Italian. Thanks Alan Jordan! – Mr. Acetone, YouTube comment.

This is a delightful book. We looked at the website and listened to it in Spanish too. My daughter, Rosita, was able to go to bed without turning on her flashlight. The graphics on YouTube aren’t that great, but they’re much better when you visit the site I guess they want you to order the book and CD, but guess what, we’re going to do that. We think it’s neat that you she can stick a CD into a CD player and play the track as many times as she wants. – Brenda Silver – Comment on YouTube.

My daughter is 3. She took to sleeping in the floor for a while because she said there was a monster in her bed. But, now she has gone back to her bed. - A comment sent to the author by e-mail.

Okay, what you have read, and what does it mean and how can you apply that when talking about characters and setting and prediction skills and all of those kinds of skills that are so important for reading comprehension and The Monster on Top of the Bed actually includes those discussion questions, and I love that about the story. – Dr. Melissa Hughes

Here is a 1-minute 13 second excerpt from an interview that I conducted with Dr. Melissa Hughes, when we were discussing the concept of summer slide, the impact of taking the summer off from school. Dr. Hughes surprised me by knowing about my book, and she made this comment. [jwplayer mediaid="101"]

Discovery is a fundamental concept in my children’s writing. I don’t teach or preach in my writing. I set up a situation and from that children discover valuable lessons. For example, Karrit and Suzy treat each other as they would like to be treated (The Golden Rule). Nowhere in the book do I lecture or have a character say something like, “I’m treating you with respect and I know you will do the same for me.” Look at the video of the book and you’ll see and hear that the artist and I show rather than tell.

I invite you to prove that The Monster on Top of the Bed does all of things that I’ve just claimed. Feel free to download the 98 .mp3 files from the Listen page of our website and then play them for your children or students.

Here is an interview that I conducted with Manuela Pentangelo. It’s on the CD, and you can download the entire audio contents of the CD from our Listen page.
